Gardens to Visit
The Cotswolds are blessed with some of the most stunning gardens in the country.
Kiftsgate Court Gardens are the creation of three generations of women gardeners. Started by Heather Muir in the twenties; continued by Diany Binny from 1950s and now looked after by Anne Chambers. The gardens are a plantsman's delight. At any time of the year there is something of interest to draw you back again and again.
Hidcote Manor a famous Arts and Crafts garden dating from 1905. Created by Lawrence Johnston, a keen plantsman with a strong sense of artistic composition. Yew, holly and beech hedges are used to define a series of garden rooms. One room is occupied only by a circular raised pool. Others have a character deriving from their inspired planting.
Rousham Park is famously an 18th century landscape garden designed by William Kent, which has miraculously survived almost unchanged to this day. In its time it was considered to be Kent's masterpiece and nearly 300 years later the small scale of the garden, adorned with sculpture and temples still has huge charm. As if all this history were insufficient, there is also stunning 20th century planting in the walled garden.
Sezincote is an extraordinary Indian House in the Mogul style of Rajastan set in the Cotswolds.
Built in 1810 by Charles Cockerell who had worked in India and laid out by Repton the great landscape designer, it was the inspiration behind the Brighton Pavilion.
